Since stepping down as chairman and CEO of Amazon in July 2021, Bezos has made good on his promise to focus on philanthropy. In October 2022, his $10 billion Bezos Earth Fund announced it was looking to build a coalition of African and European countries to reverse deforestation and degradation of more than 38.6K square miles of land in Africa by 2030. Later that month, during a speech he gave accepting the Galileo Prophets of Philanthropy Award from the Vatican, he declared that his for-profit space exploration company, Blue Origin — which he reportedly funds with $1 billion a year of his own money — also has an altruistic long-term goal: to move all polluting industry off Earth. His charitable efforts have yet to put a dent in his net worth, which in 2022 was estimated to be around $140 billion.
